Class Development

WaterWise understands that educating people about the importance of water conservation requires that we motivate and excite people about what they can do to contribute. Simply disseminating literature is not usually as effective as interactive programs where the customer is personally exposed to these ideas and practices. In many cases a hands-on approach combined with examples and solutions to present-day problems are necessary to drive the message home.

This is the ideology WaterWise uses in teaching its Professional and Gardener series as well as other courses. Curricula development at WaterWise concentrates on the individual student and communicates classrooms skills, which they can use on the job or at their home. WaterWise sees the individual and their collaborative efforts as the key to a successful water conservation campaign. Therefore, the individual's needs are considered first and foremost. In order to best serve each water agency, WaterWise encourages ideas and input from water agency personnel about the demographics within the service area of the agency.

We can then develop classes, which not only adhere to our ideology, but also responds to the goals of each particular agency. This balance enhances the effectiveness of the learning experience, which fosters individual growth and further participation in conservation activities. Classes can be developed in English or Spanish to best suit the requirements of the attendees and their water agency. The following steps are recommended to ensure that a class is developed in the most effective manner.

• Meet with agency to discuss class objective and target audience
• Prepare outline
• Research data for class
• Take photos
• Prepare video (if necessary)
• Present class draft and handbook draft for agency review
• Revise class (if necessary)
• Finalize class and handbook
• Present class to agency
