Beyoncé recently announced her campaign, BEYGOOD4BURUNDI, to help thousands of people gain access to safe drinking water. Beyoncé has partnered with UNICEF and is supported by CHIME For Change and Global Citizen to support the building of water supply systems and the drilling of wells and springs in the overburdened districts of Burundi.
Burundi is a small yet densely populated country in Africa, surrounded by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda and Tanzania. Nearly half of the population lacks access to drinking water and/or must travel approximately five miles everyday in order to collect water. It often takes an entire family to get the job done.
The country holds one of the youngest populations with the average life expectancy of 43 years old. 52 percent of the population is under the age of 18. Young children do not often make it past five years old due to increased diseases from lack of water or from drinking unsafe water.
In order to help combat the issue, BEYGOOD4BURUNDI and UNICEF are campaigning to raise awareness and accept donations (https://www.unicefusa.org/donate/beygood-4-burundi/32391) to help thousands gain access to clean drinking water. Beyoncé is selling two t-shirts on her website, which can be ordered here: http://shop.beyonce.com/products/61072-beygood4burundi-logo-tee, and are priced at $30.00 a piece with proceeds going towards the cause.
“Access to water is a fundamental right. When you give children clean and safe water, you don’t just give them life, you give them health, an education, and a brighter future,” said Beyoncé.
